About us

The Northern Territory is facing an unprecedented expansion in highly polluting fossil fuel projects, despite overwhelming scientific evidence of the enormous risks they pose to public health, clean air and water, the environment and a liveable climate.

Current threats include:

  • Fracking in the Beetaloo Basin
  • Santos’ plans for massive expansions of offshore gas mining, and
  • A proposed gas-processing and petrochemicals hub at Middle Arm in Darwin Harbour.

The No New Gas Coalition was formed in early 2023 as a community response to both Territory Labor and the Country Liberal Party declaring their support for these dangerous projects, and to channel our outrage into action!

Our members are made up of representatives from a number of environmental groups, unionists as well as many community members who are not affiliated with any particular organisation, but who are simply concerned about what is happening in the Territory.

In September 2023, the United Nations reported that these projects “threaten to make Darwin and the region a climate change sacrifice zone”. We, however, believe that the community can stop these projects and keep the Territory safe for future generations. We also think that we can build a stronger, kinder and more prosperous community at the same time - we might even have some fun along the way!

In Darwin, we meet every fortnight, and working groups volunteer to take on particular tasks such as doorknocking, community outreach, banner painting, meetings with politicians and other stakeholders, and event organising.
